In Japan, mid-winter is a time when students are challenged to intensify their regular practice for a period of time. At Multnomah Aikikai, we honor this tradition with a Winter Intensive theme, and by emphasizing the importance of maintaining regular periods of intensified training.
We acknowledge the challenge of practice in the world of family, work and other responsibilities while simultaneously recognizing the transformative effect that an intensive period of study can have on our personal development. In this spirit, let's set the tone for a renewed commitment to practice, coming together with our fellow dojo members and supporting each other by participating in this year’s Winter Intensive as much as possible!
This year's theme is an emphasis on the “Lively” pillar expressed by Chiba Sensei’s Five Pillars of Aikido; Centered, Connected, Whole, Lively, Open. At the beginning of training, we start with basic Kihon Waza (static techniques) and ultimately, we express the principle of Aikido in Ki no Nagare (flowing from movement) practice as a spontaneous and natural manifestation of the art. We will explore how liveliness can help us form the bridge from static technique to spontaneous flowing movement.
During classes in January , we will explore soft and lively movement using a variety of exercises to bring the body alive through all aspects of ukemi as well as when performing techniques. Beginning with exercises designed to enliven responses to our partner’s movements, we will then bring this mindful attention to practice the variety of kata and responses found throughout our kyu curriculum. Potential pathways for exploration include:
Ukemi exercises
Henka waza (changing techniques)
Jyu waza (free flowing technique)
The new year is an excellent time to renew our commitment to training, look in the mirror (kagami), break open our perceived limitations (biraki), and open to new possibilities. Please be sure to mark your calendar for Kagami Biraki this month.
Please note: Thursday classes in January will be open to ALL LEVELS. Please join us on Thursday nights for more practice opportunities!
